About NSJO

How do I know when and where you are performing?

We create public Facebook events, tweet out links to shows and also announce performances on our “Up Coming Shows” page of the website.

Do you have any recordings?

We will be working on our first recording soon. We’ll keep you posted.

Can I book only a small version of the band?

In some cases it may be possible, but for the best experience our orchestra comes as a full set. However many members of the NSJO have jazz combos and other smaller groups.

What is a Jazz Orchestra?

The “orchestra” name harkens back to the golden age of the big band when the band was regularly referred to as anĀ orchestra. Additionally the Night Star Jazz Orchestra is made up of musicians in the woodwind section who are proficient at what are commonly called “doubles.” Each woodwind section member plays clarinet, flute and saxophone. The brass section is made of up musicians who play a range of instruments in their family of brass horns. This wide range of instrumental capability gives the band more of an orchestral feel with the possible combinations of sounds that were used in music from the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s. The Night Star Jazz Orchestra also features a show built around many of the studio orchestral arrangements of Nelson Riddle that Ella Fitzgerald recorded on her Gershwin and Berlin songbook albums. These arrangements have violin, viola, cello, harp and celeste.
